Getting around
On this page you will find hints for using various means of transport in Berlin. For how to arrive at the venue, see the page Getting there.
Public transport
Berlin offers an efficient public transport system of underground (U-Bahn) and surface (S-Bahn) trains, tram lines, bus services, and ferry boats. These are operated by the Berlin Transport Authority (BVG) and German Railways (S-Bahn), respectively. A ticket is valid basically for all means of transport in the integrated transport network. However, don't expect all lines to be operating always as shown in the route map—construction works cause changes, detours, and even interruptions virtually every day somewhere in the network.
The Berlin public transport system is divided into 3 regions: A, B, and C. For conference visitors a ticket covering zones A & B (= Berlin municipal area) will likely to be fine. If you need to venture into zone C, an extension ticket for each trip can be had for 1.60 EUR in addition to a valid ticket for zones A & B, or a single trip ticket covering all 3 zones for 3.10 EUR. This will be needed for example if you are arriving to or leaving from Schönefeld Airport (SXF) which is in zone C.
There is an online journey planner available, which can be used to find the best connection for each of your trips. Just type in the location of departure and destination (which can also be addresses), and date and time of departure or arrival.
Please note that all tickets must be validated before their first use. When boarding a bus, you have to show your valid ticket to the driver, or to buy a ticket from the driver. If you want to take a bicycle with you (not possible on buses), you need a supplemental ticket for your bike. Please buy your tickets only from vending machines or official BVG ticket shops.
